Solid quality RAM product. The base is cast aluminum and the ball is made of either solid rubber or the ball is some other material and coated in a hard rubber. The point of the ball being rubber or rubber coated is that it'll keep the mount extenstion that is attached to it from moving around. Very well made.
My particular item was not finished nearly as nicely as pictured in that the base is more of a matte black, the metal shaft is partially painted black and partially exposed aluminum, and the rubber of the ball is not consistently shiny or matte in finish. This of course will have zero impact on its function, just pointing out that I expect exceptional finish from RAM products and did not get it on this one. Call me picky.

I've used Rammount products for years, mainly on my motorcycle where they really take a beating. Never had a failure and never had to replace a part because it was wore out. They're stuff is built to last and really stands out in today's world of disposable everything. I wouldn't consider using any other brand of mount. There's just no reason to do so.

I first came across this kind of mount when I bought my F800GS. Been hooked ever since with them... Got one for the GPS, another one to place the tollbooth pass and this one for the SPOT. It protects and keeps in place the SPOT, no vibrations at all. You can leave it in the bike or take it off very easy. So far I think this system is the best mounting option for bikes. If you want to keep your gadgets in place, look no more... this is the mounting system you have to get.

The powder coated marine grade aluminum base contains a 1" diameter rubber ball connected at right angles to a 1.25" x 2.5" inch diamond plate. The base has two holes 1.912" from center to center, positioned at both ends of the diamond base. Material: Powder Coated Marine Grade Aluminum Ball Size: 1" Rubber Ball "B" Size
